403(b): distribution and tax questions

Review the current account process, available transactions, and tax questions for a 403(b).

Account review

A 403(b) plan’s payment options depend on its current plan terms, the account source, and whether the participant still works for the sponsoring organization.

Get the current 403(b) distribution materials

The plan or its current vendor can explain whether it offers a cash distribution, rollover, loan, hardship route, installments, or another transaction for this account.

Confirm the plan and vendor record

Identify the employer, plan name, vendor or recordkeeper, account source, and employment status. Older 403(b) accounts can have more than one provider record to reconcile.

If you still work for the sponsoring employer

Ask which in-service features the current 403(b) plan permits and which account sources each feature can use.

If you no longer work for the sponsoring employer

Request the former-employee payment packet and the plan’s current instructions for cash or a direct rollover.
