457(b): distribution and tax questions

Review the current account process, available transactions, and tax questions for a 457(b).

Account review

A 457(b) payment question starts with the plan’s current terms and whether it is a governmental or another type of 457 arrangement.

Identify the plan before selecting a payment

A cash payment, rollover, installment election, or other distribution route can depend on the plan category, employment status, and current provider process.

Confirm the employer and plan classification

Use the statement and provider materials to identify the sponsoring employer, plan category, account balance, and employment relationship. Do not apply a 401(k) payment rule to a 457(b) without confirming the current plan terms.

If you still work for the sponsoring employer

Ask the plan which in-service transactions are available and what event or documentation its process requires.

If you no longer work for the sponsoring employer

Ask the current provider for the post-employment payment options and the exact paperwork for the route you want.
