529 Plan: distribution and tax questions
Review the current account process, available transactions, and tax questions for a 529 Plan.
Account review
A 529 plan distribution, beneficiary change, or other account action should be reviewed against the plan record and the education expenses or purpose involved.
Identify the plan action before requesting money
The plan can provide its current distribution and beneficiary-change process. A payment for qualified education expenses and a cash withdrawal for another purpose are different transactions.
Match the distribution with the education record
Review the account owner, beneficiary, plan statement, expense records, scholarships or other assistance, and the tax year in which payment will occur.
