Thrift Savings Plan: distribution and tax questions

Review the current account process, available transactions, and tax questions for a Thrift Savings Plan.

Account review

A Thrift Savings Plan payment question begins with the current TSP record and whether federal separation information has been reflected in the account.

Use TSP’s current withdrawal materials

A cash payment, partial withdrawal, scheduled payment, annuity choice, or direct rollover are different TSP elections. The current TSP account and instructions establish which one is available.

Confirm federal-service and account details

Check whether the account reflects separation, whether traditional and Roth balances need separate attention, and whether a loan, beneficiary matter, court order, or prior election affects the request.

If you still work for the sponsoring employer

If you are still in federal service, use the current TSP materials to determine which in-service options are available.

If you no longer work for the sponsoring employer

After separation is reflected, use the TSP withdrawal materials for the payment route you want rather than a private-sector plan form.
