Can you withdraw money from an IRA while working?

Employment does not usually prevent an IRA owner from requesting a distribution, but the account type, taxable amount, and age can change the result.

An IRA owner can generally request a distribution while working

Working for an employer does not usually prevent an owner from taking money from a traditional IRA, SEP IRA, or SIMPLE IRA. Unlike a workplace plan, an IRA is not ordinarily limited by whether you have separated from an employer. The financial institution that holds the IRA processes the request.

That access question is separate from the tax result. A distribution can be available while still creating ordinary income, withholding, or an additional tax question.

Do not use workplace-plan rules for an IRA

A current 401(k) or 403(b) participant may need a plan-permitted event before money can be distributed. An IRA does not use that same employment-based gate. The account statement should identify whether the account is a traditional IRA, Roth IRA, SEP IRA, or SIMPLE IRA before you compare rules.

A rollover, a distribution paid to you, and a trustee-to-trustee transfer are also different transactions. The instructions from the current custodian and receiving institution identify which paperwork applies.

Age and the taxable amount still matter

Traditional IRA distributions are generally included in income to the extent they have not already been taxed. If the distribution is taken before age 59½, an additional federal tax can apply unless an exception applies. The exception rules are account-specific and should be checked against the current IRS guidance.

A distribution may contain previously taxed basis if the owner made nondeductible contributions. That history is not always visible on the current account statement, so prior returns and Forms 8606 can matter when determining the taxable amount.

Records to review before requesting payment

Start with the current statement, the account’s formal title, and the custodian’s distribution form. If the payment is intended to cover a current expense, separate the cash amount needed from the gross amount being considered.

  • The account type and source of the money in the account.
  • Prior nondeductible contributions, conversions, or rollovers that affect the tax record.
  • The custodian’s withholding choices and payment instructions.
  • Whether the transaction is a cash distribution, direct transfer, or rollover.

An old rollover IRA can be accessed through its current custodian

A rollover IRA is still an IRA even if the money came from a former employer plan. Employment with a new employer does not itself block a distribution from that account. Confirm the custodian, legal title, pre-tax or Roth character, and whether the balance includes a rollover, nondeductible contributions, or a prior conversion before submitting a cash request.

If you cannot find the IRA, begin with prior Form 5498 or 1099-R records, old statements, and the institution that received the rollover. Once the custodian confirms the account, request its current distribution form and withholding instructions rather than trying to use the former employer’s paperwork.

Turn the cash request into an account-specific review

For a traditional, SEP, or SIMPLE IRA, the first question is usually not whether you are still working. It is what type of IRA you own, what amount you want paid, what the tax records show, and whether the payment should be cash, a transfer, or an eligible rollover. That sequence makes the provider request clear and prevents an IRA transaction from being described as an employer-plan withdrawal.

If you want to access an IRA balance, we can review the current statement, custodian materials, withholding choices, and the tax questions connected with the distribution before the request is submitted.
