Use a 529 plan only when you own or control one
A 529 plan can be relevant before a student or parent applies for new education borrowing when the account owner has a 529 balance for the beneficiary. Start with the plan statement, account owner, designated beneficiary, school bill, other education assistance, and the tax year in which the payment will occur.
The plan’s distribution process can pay qualifying education costs under its current instructions. Federal rules also allow limited 529 distributions for certain student-loan principal or interest payments. The plan and beneficiary records establish whether the payment you want fits that route.
Match the 529 payment to the actual education expense or loan record
Do not treat a 529 as a general cash account. A qualified education payment, a payment toward eligible student-loan repayment, a beneficiary change, a Roth IRA rollover, and a nonqualified cash distribution are different actions. The plan administrator can identify the form or payment process it currently uses.
Keep the school invoice, qualified-expense record, scholarship or assistance information, student-loan statement where applicable, 529 distribution confirmation, and Form 1099-Q with the tax-year file. These records establish how the payment was made and how its tax treatment is reviewed.
Review the 529 route before adding student debt
If a 529 can cover the expense or a permitted portion of student-loan repayment, the account owner can review that route before applying for a new education loan. The decision should be based on the actual 529 plan record and education expense, not an assumption that every family has a 529 or that every cash withdrawal is qualified.
Distribution Wise can review the plan statement, beneficiary and expense records, provider process, and tax questions connected with the payment you are considering.
