Can you take money from a 403(b) after leaving your job?

After separation, a 403(b) may offer a cash distribution, direct rollover, installments, or another payment route. The current plan and vendor materials determine which choices apply.

After separation, a 403(b) can have payment options

If you no longer work for the organization that sponsored your 403(b), the plan may allow a cash distribution, partial payment, direct rollover, installments, or a choice to leave the balance in the plan. The current plan and vendor materials determine which of those routes your account can use.

Start with the former employer’s name, the plan name, the current vendor or recordkeeper, and the most recent statement. A 403(b) account can include different contribution sources or contracts, so a balance alone does not show every payment choice.

Ask for the former-employee distribution packet

Request the current post-employment distribution packet from the plan or vendor. It should identify the available payment forms, withholding elections, rollover instructions, signatures, and any plan-specific conditions. Use the current packet rather than an old form from the school, hospital, church, or nonprofit where you worked.

If the account is no longer visible in the vendor portal you remember, do not assume it was paid out. The former employer may have changed vendors, or a contract may be listed separately from another 403(b) balance. Ask the plan contact to identify every current provider and contract connected with your record.

Cash and a direct rollover are different instructions

A cash payment sends the distribution to you. A direct rollover sends an eligible amount to a receiving retirement account under the provider’s rollover procedure. The IRS treats those paths differently, and the current distribution package should make clear how each instruction is completed.

Before choosing cash, identify the gross amount, expected withholding, account source, payment date, and tax records that will follow. Before choosing a rollover, confirm the receiving account, its registration, and the provider’s current delivery instructions. Do not select a payment route merely because the form uses a familiar account label.

Bring the current 403(b) record to a review

If you want to access money from an old 403(b), bring the statement, former-employer information, current provider packet, and the payment route you are considering. Distribution Wise can review the available materials, organize the provider questions, and identify the tax records that belong with the request before it is submitted.
